The 'Sutherland Schools Pipe Band" was formed in 1984, and is based in Golspie High School. Band members, boys and girls aged 11 to 17 years, come from various villages in the county of Sutherland. The band has travelled extensively throughout Scotland and the Continent of Europe. They have played in the presence on His Royal Highness Prince Charles on three occasions, and twice for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother - the second time was by personal invitation to her Caithness residence, the Castle of Mey. |

In 1989 the band visited Norway. |
|
| In 1993, 1994 and 1995 the band played
at three separate Folk Festivals in France and in 1996 they went to the U S A
and Canada. They were so well received in New Hampshire, U S A, that they
returned in 1998 where they led the parade at the New Hampshire Highland Games,
which was attended by 30,000 spectators. They also played at two International Tattoos as well as entering and winning a Grade 3 Pipe Band Competition - no mean feat for a ten day trip. |
| In 1995 we took part in the "Biggest Massed Bands in the World" parade in Edinburgh, raising funds for the Marie Curie Cancer Fund - an event which is to repeated this year on Saturday August 5th, with hopefully more people taking part. We also play at numerous Highland Games and Galas as well as other events throughout the year. In 1997 we recorded a compact disc titled 'Millennium' which we now have for sale. The Band is run by a committee. It is a registered charity and is totally dependent on charitable donations for the necessary funds to continue. The local Education Authority provides storage space for equipment in the school and gives the use of a room for weekly practices. The committee runs fund raising events and the band does street parades in the local villages to raise funds. Young people who play with the Sutherland Schools Pipe Band gain musical, social and educational experiences of a different kind, through their travels with the band, which they would not otherwise encounter and have mastered the art of playing & marching at the same time! |
| On June 24th 2000, they led the Pan Highland Millennium
Festival Parade right around the town of Inverness, playing and marching
continuously for an hour! Over 1,500 people from all over the Highlands,
participated in this festival. An invitation to play at a Music Festival in Charbonnier-les-Mines, France, from 13th - 17th July 2000, was received and twenty of the Band members attended this event. They enjoyed a multi-cultural festival and were very well received. They play at numerous Highland Games and Galas as well as other events throughout the year. They play at the Dornoch Hotel for the guests every Thursday evening during the Summer months. Their future engagements include a massed pipe band parade in Dornoch on Saturday 12th August, following which they will play at a wedding in Dunrobin Castle. They will take part in the annual Northlands Festival in Wick. The band is run by a committee. It is a registered charity and is totally dependent on charitable donations for the necessary funds to continue. The local Education Authority provides storage space for equipment in the school and gives the use of a room for weekly practice sessions. The committee runs fund-raising events and the band does street parades in the local villages to raise funds.
